Birch Hill
It is a wonderful place to experience winters in Alaska, learn to ski and snowboard. You can work off those excess winter pounds while learning a new sport. Cabin fever won't be able to reach you here. Ski and snowboard lessons are available every weekend at reasonable rates. Come and get your daily lift pass, a 90-minute lesson and ski equipment rental for the day. For one low price, you can learn to ski or snowboard and then spend the rest of the afternoon practicing your new skills and enjoying the outdoors. Our snack bar offers hot and cold sandwiches and other treats. You can come in, warm up by the fireplace and enjoy a hot chocolate or cappuccino after a hard day of skiing or boarding. Birch Hill is available to support military ski training with prior coordination. Units must provide their own medical support during this training.

Snowboarding
Snow making equipment gives Mother Nature a boost. When conditions are right, several guns positioned on the hill help build the snow pack early in the season. In Alaska's Interior, winter temperatures descend on the area in October, but since the post is located in an arctic desert, sometimes there is not enough snowfall to ski on. The snow making machine allows the hill to open earlier, which in turn gives Fort Wainwright's Arctic Warriors more time to develop an essential skill for surviving in the arctic: skiing.
